A violent altercation at a recreational vehicle park in Southern California resulted in three individuals being hospitalised, including the suspected gunman, authorities confirmed on Sunday, 4 May.
The incident occurred at approximately 2:40 p.m. local time (21:40 UTC) at the Canyon RV Park within Featherly Park, located in the suburban city of Yorba Linda, roughly 24 kilometres east of Anaheim. According to local officials, the shooting followed a prior dispute between the suspect and one of the victims. The assailant allegedly returned to the park, attempted to strike the victim with his vehicle, and then opened fire before turning the weapon on himself.
A fourth individual sustained minor injuries after being struck by the suspect's car and was treated at the scene. Police have not yet released the identities of those involved, citing an ongoing investigation.
Chaos Amid Family Gatherings
The shooting erupted during a dual event at the park: a Volkswagen enthusiasts' meetup and a child's birthday party. Witness Andrea Montano described the scene to local broadcaster KTLA, recounting how attendees rushed for cover as gunfire rang out. "I immediately recognised the sound of shots and told my daughter to hide inside our RV," Montano said. "It was terrifying—people were screaming, unsure where the danger was coming from."
Authorities clarified that the attack was unrelated to the car enthusiast event, though CBS Los Angeles noted witnesses believed the victims were known to the suspect. The park, popular for weekend gatherings, lies in a region frequented by tourists visiting nearby attractions such as Disneyland.
Context of Gun Violence
While mass shootings remain relatively rare in Yorba Linda, the incident adds to ongoing international scrutiny of U.S. gun laws. California, known for having some of America's strictest firearm regulations, has seen multiple high-profile shootings in recent years.
Local police urged anyone with additional information to come forward. Further updates are expected as investigators piece together the sequence of events leading to the violence.
